The challenges of health and safety at work in changing climate
Date: Tuesday, February 11th, 2025 at 18:30
Location: Chambre des salariés, 2-4 rue Pierre Hentges, L-1726 Luxembourg
with Dr Manal Azzi who is currently the Team Lead on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Policy at the International Labour Organization (ILO) based in Geneva, Switzerland.
Theme:
The rapid pace of climate change is resulting in significant challenges for the world of work. Drawing on findings from the ILO’s two most recent reports – Heat at Work: Implications for safety and health and Ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate – this discussion will highlight how excessive heat, extreme weather events, air pollution, UV radiation, vectorborne diseases and increased agrochemical use are severely impacting workers worldwide.
Dr. Manal Azzi will examine the health risks workers face, including heat-related illnesses, chronic conditions, workplace injuries, mental health impacts and reduced productivity. Vulnerable groups – such as outdoor workers, informal workers, pregnant women, and those in poorly ventilated environments – face heightened risks.
The discussion will focus on policy responses and workplace-level actions being implemented globally, such as participatory risk assessments, heat exposure thresholds, hydration strategies, shaded rest areas and education on heat stress prevention. The importance of updating OSH laws to address climate-related risks and recognizing heat-related illnesses as occupational diseases will be emphasized. Dr. Azzi will explore the need for coordinated efforts at both the national and workplace levels, supported by social dialogue and collaboration between governments, employers and workers.
The conference language is English.
